The ship sailed under the flag of Singapore. The Affinity V tanker carrying oil was heading from Portugal to the port of Saudi Arabia.

Navigational sources reported that the ship blocked navigation in the channel. George Safwat, a spokesman for Suez Canal Authority, shared an information with an Egyptian government - affiliated Extra News satellite television that the Affinity ran aground at around 7.15pm local time on Wednesday, and was refloated five hours later, he said.

A similar incident occurred in March 2021 when the Panama-flagged container ship Ever Given ran aground in the southern Suez Canal. He blocked the movement of all ships.

The channel's administration demanded $200 million to be paid as collateral in cash, and wanted to receive the remaining $350 million later by bank transfer.

The parties did not disclose the amount of compensation that Evergreen paid for the week of blocking the Suez Canal. As a gift, the owner of Ever Given, handed over a tugboat and money compensation to the Suez Canal administration.
