FuelEU Maritime initiative to decarbonise the maritime sector

The European Parliament and members of the EU Council managed to agree on "FuelEU Maritime," a new regulation mandating reductions in emissions in the maritime transport sector
The European Parliament and members of the EU Council managed to agree on "FuelEU Maritime," a new regulation mandating reductions in emissions in the maritime transport sector.

By reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of ships' energy when traveling to, from, or within the EU, it aims to promote the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels (RLF).
  • All vessels of any flag above 5,000 GT traveling to, from or at berth in ports in the EU*

  • Beginning January 1, 2025, applying to all ships above a gross tonnage of 5,000 whose purpose is transporting passengers or cargo for commercial purposes

  • Energy used at berth in an EU port

  • 100% of energy used in intra-EU voyages

  • 50% of energy used on extra-EU voyages

*Some vessels will be exempt, including: naval vessels, fishing vessels, ships using non-mechanical propulsion

What will be affected by FuelEU?

The regulation includes requirements to gradually reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of fuels used by the shipping sector, starting with a 2% reduction in 2025, and reaching as much as 80% by 2050.

Shipping companies will need to calculate GHG emissions per unit of energy used on board, based on their reported fuel consumption and the emissions factors of their respective fuels.

Note: The FuelEU Maritime initiative is part of the Fit for 55 package. Presented by the European Commission on 14 July 2021, the package aims to enable the EU to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and to achieve climate neutrality in 2050.

Аdvantage of Fuel Optimization System from Marine Digital:
Marine Digital FOS can be integrated with other system and third-party's solutions through the API. To implement vessel performance monitoring for any vessel, we are using mathematical algorithms, machine learning and the same equipment as in FOS. The more data we collect from vessels, the more precise reports and recommendations our system will perform according to your individual requirements in fleet management.
