Measure twice and cut once or how the sea level prevented the construction of the bridge

During the construction of the bridge between Germany and Switzerland, an unfortunate mistake by engineers was revealed. The reason was that different countries measure sea levels differently

In Germany and Switzerland, there are cities with the same name Laufenburg, separated by a river. In 2003, they decided to jointly build a new bridge - teams of builders worked towards each other. At the time of the completion of construction, an unfortunate mistake of the engineers was revealed.

Measure twice and cut once or how the sea level prevented the construction of the bridge

The construction progressed quickly at first. The bridge grew towards the middle of the river in the hot summer of 2003 when people became suspicious.
"We had already concreted two stages when it became apparent that something wasn't right with the height" recalls the site manager Nedeljko Madzarac in the newspaper "Berner Rundschau".

On Christmas Eve 2003, the site management carried out the last scheduled inspection. But it turned out that the difference between the two parts of the bridge was about half a meter.

The reason for the error is the fact that in the area of road and bridge construction, the horizons on the German and Swiss sides are based on different reference horizons.

The fact is that German and Swiss engineers calculated the design of this bridge in different ways. The Germans took the level of the North Sea as zero, and their neighbors - the Swiss - the level of the Mediterranean Sea.

Although the engineers were initially aware of the difference of 27 cm, somehow instead of zeroing this figure doubled, and the German part of the bridge had to be lowered.

Аdvantage of Fuel Optimization System from Marine Digital:
Marine Digital FOS can be integrated with other system and third-party's solutions through the API. To implement vessel performance monitoring for any vessel, we are using mathematical algorithms, machine learning and the same equipment as in FOS. The more data we collect from vessels, the more precise reports and recommendations our system will perform according to your individual requirements in fleet management.
